PROJECT 1: Masters Of Control

Assigned Masterworks: The Game of Work, Pavlok, & Green Goose

Recreation:  Angry Bear

Game design theory is of vital importance for interaction designers to design and create impressing experience. One of the reasons is game is invented with human nature and developed with civilization. The master pieces show successful implication of game design method: Clear goals; Clear Scorekeeping; Feedback; Rewards; and Penalties.

Angry Bear is a phone charger allows user to get rid of their social media addiction. Users set up a timer and put the mobile phone on the charger. Before the timer ends, the phone is supervised by the bear and if you remove the phone from the territory of the bear, the bear will be angrily shaking body with roars and red eyes.

PROJECT 2: The Command: Buttons

Zoe Goes

Designer: Zhengnan Zhao

Archetype: Transformation

Context:  “In 2014, 3-year old Zoey Houston had a stroke that caused debilitating weakness in her left side. She is one of the estimated 3500 children in the US who suffer stroke every year.”  –<Portland Press Hearld>

I was impressed by the story. I felt strong inner calling that I should use the design power to help her and her peers who suffer tragedies and are going through tough process of recovery.

Product: Give a character to the disabled part of the body. The character, Zoe, will talk to kids, reminds kids of physical therapy, and help them go through this tough process with motivation and pleasure. It is a wearable robot connected to a IOS game. And Zoe’s story is going on. For more detail, go to http://zhengnanzhao.com/zoe-goes

PROJECT 2: The Command: Do What I Mean

Designer:  Zhengnan Zhao

Archetype: Transformation

Context: An estimated  3,500 -4,000  children in the United States each year suffer stroke, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But children with disabilities can develop and achieve their full potential with assistance from the rehabilitation services.

“Kids have an ability to use new parts of the brain to take over tasks that the injured parts were doing. This ability exists in adults but not to the degree it exists in children,” Dr. Paul Gerrard, the associate medical director of New England Rehabilitation, said.

During research I found that one of the most effective ways help kids participate in rehabilitation is to keep kids motivated and engaged. And one of the best way is to give a character to the disabled part of the body to allow them to have representations of themselves. Kids can personalize Zoe by changing her dreams (into space as an astronaut, to zoo as a animal train, to Olympic Games as an athlete, etc.) And professional doctors and physical therapists can add or remove phases according to kids’ recovery conditions.

The character, Zoe, will talk to kids, remind kids to do physical therapy, and help kids go through this tough process with motivation and pleasure.

Project 3-The Arrival: old dogs, new tricks

Burger Interface

Designer: Zhengnan Zhao

Archetype: decline

Context: What’s the next platform after smart phone and touch devices? As the AR/VR technology is applied on more and more cases, the border of physical world and digital world is disappearing. There are chances that  For our mind, the button is somehow only a reflection and give us the feedback that we give the operation successfully. So there is an opportunity that we can use any object as our tool to control any IoT device.

Product: Based on the speculation on future interface, I delivered the experience of using a normal burger to control devices in the space including a speaker, a TV, and light bulbs. With the camera and the AR devices, you can change anything into a remoter. Users are trained by the way we use different tools for centuries and they use the burger naturally. The only thing you need to do is concentrate on the thing you want to control and stare at it. The background is settled up in cooperation with McDonald.

Project 4-The Gathering: strength in numbers

Tak Tak

Designer:  Raquel Kalil and Zhengnan Zhao

Archetype:  Growth

Context:  With the rise of augmented reality technology, there is an opportunity to explore new surfaces for layering content. What would happen if we layered our data today oral conversations with additive expressions? In 2030, Tak Tak takes the role of exploring the social and technological implications of subverting our internal meanings onto visible surfaces over our bodies.

Product: Tak Tak is a conversational interface that listens to your conversation and augments expressions to emphasize, exaggerate, express meaning. By augmenting additional expressions to the peripheral of the conversation, people can emphasize points of the conversation and express themselves.

Each Tak Tak integrates AI technology and machine learning in order to listen, interpret and react to parts of the conversation. Tak Tak gathers its user’s conversational data to learn and adapt its modes of expression. Using woven-emotional sensor technology, Tak Tak projects animations for the listener to see and interpret the speaker’s intended meaning.  Tak Tak begins as a visualization of users tone of voice. With machine learning and branding, Tak Tak can evolve its expressions and meaning-making over time.
